It has been exactly 4 years since I started exploring the possibility of educating myself online, and I've certainly not disappointed with my decision. Today, almost every successful person or a leader dedicates some of his time to learn new things online. Let it be MOOC's(Massive Open Online Courses), Blogs, Youtube, Kindle, etc. As you can see the online channels through which we can consume new knowledgeable contents are limitless.
I always say to my friends that a person with a computer and a internet connection can plan, learn, execute & achieve anything he aspires to!
Just to give a short example with respect to my above statement, I would like all of you to explore the online startup called 'Treehouse'. They're into teaching coding(programming) to almost anyone out there. It doesn't matter whether you have computer science background or not, but here you can learn & do practical coding and also explore the possibility of getting your next dream job as a developer. The following video encouraged me to explore Team Treehouse
In 2014, the concept of e-learning was not quite matured. When I used to tell my colleagues, friends & family, they tried convincing me that it won't last long as the traditional model of classroom-based learning is the only way to go. I'm glad that I kept exploring.
From my 4 years of experience in online learning, I would like to share some of my tips for all those curious minds out there:
- The Internet is vast: Just a simple google search like 'learn to program in python' can throw out a couple of million links at you & I'm sure that you'll get overwhelmed. I would simply suggest that start with tools that you already know. For eg., Youtube is a great tool for finding quick DIY tutorials as well as for getting insights from some of the experts in the field which you're trying to learn. Don't expect to learn in-depth knowledge on a platform like Youtube.
- Best Quality Education at your fingertips: I'm sure that everyone reading this post has always dreamed of going to an Ivy League University. Very few of us actually end up going there, but with online learning, everyone gets the accessibility to explore courses and modules which are taught there from best of the best instructors across the globe. The most interesting part of this is that most of these courses are offered for free through the MOOC sites like Coursera, Edx, Open2Study etc. Coursera & Edx, both are amazing MOOC platforms who're offering courses from Universities & Organizations across the globe. I would especially suggest you explore Edx.org and also encourage you to watch the following Ted Talk from one of the Edx founders:
- Get yourself job ready: It doesn't matter if you currently have the skills which require getting your dream job, but e-learning platforms like Udacity can help you make it possible. Udacity is a Commercial MOOC(Massive Open Online Courses) platform where it brings accessible, affordable, engaging and highly effective higher education to the world. With the help of industry giants like Google, AT&T, Facebook, Salesforce, Cloudera, etc. Udacity offers Nanodegree programs and credentials to enable professionals to become qualified Web Developers, Data Analysts, Mobile Developers, etc. by acquiring real skills through a series of online courses and hands-on projects. Udacity even creates special online modules where you learn how to create your CV or apply & face the job interviews. The reason my conviction about Udacity is so strong as I myself completed a Digital Marketing Nanodegree & have acquired 4 new clients for my firm who required Digital Marketing Support for their respective firms.
- Learning & Teaching at the same time: With the power of the internet at your hand, it makes it easier for you to create & share your knowledge with the world. One of the largest online platforms which can make you achieve this is Udemy.comUdemy is the world’s largest online learning marketplace. Unlike academic MOOC programs are driven by traditional collegiate coursework, Udemy provides a platform for experts of any kind to create courses which can be offered to the public, either at no charge or for a tuition fee. Udemy provides tools which enable users to create a course, promote it and earn money from student tuition charges. If you're someone who would like to create online courses and teach global user base, then, you would surely appreciate what Udemy.com has to offer.
These are some of the few points which I thought of sharing with you all! Let me know in the comments section if you like me to elaborate more on the above points OR would you like to hear something specific to learning things online/E-Learning.
